On January 27, 2022, the East Cleveland City Schools hosted its first PTA Organizational Meeting.  In attendance at the event were officials from the Ohio PTA including President Jackie Arendt, VP of Field Service Barb Varley, East Cleveland City Schools Board of Education Vice-President Dr. Mary Rice, and newly elected board member Dr. Bennanaye Brooks.

The event kicked off with a quick performance from our Mighty Shaw Cardinal Marching Band, and feature chants from middle and high school cheerleaders.  Superintendent & CEO, Dr. Henry Pettiegrew II offered opening remarks followed by a presentation from the Ohio PTA.  The mission of the Ohio PTA is to “make every child’s potential a reality by engaging and empowering families and communities to advocate for all children.”  This meeting served as kick off to inform our families and community members about the value of creating building-level PTAs, as well as drumming up support for membership.

Beverly Bright-Lloyd, district administrator in charge of organizing and implementing PTAs in East Cleveland, called the event a huge success.  “With over 100 parents and community members in attendance, this is a wonderful start to a critical piece in our growth and future success as a district.  Parents are the heart of East Cleveland City Schools!” she said.  To help maintain the momentum of this meeting, Dr. Pettiegrew affirmed the district’s support by pledging the membership costs to the PTA for the first year.
